By our own power. With nature. For more than 70 years and into the future.

Tackling the climate crisis is our most pressing concern. The energy transition needs all of us. This is our Mission V.

In concrete terms, our Mission V means:

We are investing more than ever in the energy transition. We are making our hydroelectric power plants even more efficient. We are generating even more green electricity with modern wind farms and photovoltaic systems. And we are focusing on green hydrogen and new technological solutions. To accelerate the energy transition, we are planning to invest 5.5 billion euros in growth and maintenance between 2024 and 2026.

We believe in a future powered exclusively by renewable energies. We believe that we can succeed in largely reducing greenhouse gas emissions and curbing global warming. But we know that we can only achieve the energy transition together. By our own power.

‘The transformation to renewable energies is like open-heart surgery. We have to manage the conversion without jeopardising the security of supply and the stability of the systems. We can't put up a sign saying ‘Closed for renovation’. This is an enormous challenge.’

Michael Strugl, Chairman of the Executive Board, VERBUND AG

The three strategic directions of our Mission V

Strengthening our position as an integrated supplier and leading hydropower producer and partner in decarbonisation in Austria and Germany by:

  • expanding our position as a leading and efficient hydropower producer
  • expanding the electricity and gas infrastructure
  • contributing to the security of supply by providing balancing and control energy
  • supplying of green electricity to end customers
  • developing customer-orientated solutions in the fields of electromobility, battery storage and photovoltaics

By significantly expanding wind and PV plants in Europe, we are strengthening our independence from fossile imports in the medium term and contributing to a climate-neutral Europe. In doing so, we are also pursuing regional and technological risk diversification. We are focusing on the following areas:

  • development in Austria, Germany and selected South-Eastern European countries
  • short-term growth through structured M&A and partnerships in Spain and Italy

Green hydrogen is the key to energy system transformation and decarbonisation and a future field that VERBUND is working on:

  • Expansion and deepening of customer relationships with leading industrial companies in local hydrogen production
  • Medium-term expansion of the value chain to include international hydrogen production, marketing and the import of green hydrogen to Central Europe

To achieve this, we also need to develop internally. For us, this means aligning the entire company and creating the necessary internal framework. This is our Mission V.
