Secure power plant operation, secure electricity generation – around the clock, even in exceptional circumstances

13.03.2020Vienna

In recent days and weeks, VERBUND has already made preparations for stronger measures in response to COVID-19. Apart from the company’s overall task of providing support to cope with the situation as well as possible, the measures and precautions taken aim at ensuring electricity generation and secure power plant operation.

In addition to the preparedness of our company’s employees, who are trained for such special situations, the control technology can also play to its strengths. It allows us to monitor and control the plants remotely. A mobile standby service, which supports the remote control of our power plants, is therefore available around the clock. This system has proven to be successful, as it is also regularly used in standard operations, such as on weekends.

Thermal generation backup

Organisational measures have also already been taken at the thermal power plant location in Mellach, Styria, in order to ensure the reliable operation of the power plant facilities. The Mellach district heating power plant produces district heating for the provincial capital Graz, while the Mellach gas power plant can be called upon to support the national electricity grid.

Organisational measures

Many organisational measures are also aimed at containing the spread of disease. Many employees can work from home, personal contacts have been reduced to the absolute minimum required. Furthermore, teams have been set up in sensitive areas which are not allowed to come into contact with each other and some of which have been allocated different work places.

This guarantees the full ability of VERBUND to act in respect of secure power plant operation and the secure supply of electricity from VERBUND power plants – if necessary, with reduced staffing levels, too.
