Solar power for sustainable production

Using the solar power it generates itself, SGL Carbon is taking the next logical step on the way to sustainable production at the site in Ort im Innkreis. The PV system of almost 450 kWp was built and commissioned in cooperation with VERBUND, Austria’s leading energy company.

The company based in the town of Ort im Innkreis in Upper Austria works on the big issues of our times: Sustainable mobility, new energies and cross-sector digitalisation. To this end, composite fibre components for the automotive industry are produced at the location in Ort. These lightweight products for electric vehicles and other systems support the automotive industry in further reducing CO2 emissions. The major future topics require more intelligent, interlinked, efficient and sustainable solutions. The decision to generate green electricity on the roofs of the innovative company was therefore obvious. The solar power from the PV plant results in a reduction of about 30 tonnes of CO2 per year. The electricity flows directly into the processes and almost 100% of it is consumed on site. That makes production even more sustainable and has a positive effect on the energy balance.

No investment costs, no risk

“We have opted from the operator model of VERBUND,” explains Herwig Fischer, managing director of the SGL subsidiary in Austria. “VERBUND constructed the plant at its own expense and risk. We procure the solar electricity for a fixed agreed price that includes all fees and charges. In this way, we reduce our CO2 emissions and electricity costs, have full planning certainty and all completely independently of rising electricity prices. After the contract period of 20 years has expired, we will profit from a photovoltaic system that will supply free, climate-neutral solar power for many years to come. In short, it will pay off for us in every respect.”

Economics and ecology in harmony

Increasing numbers of companies are using their business premises to produce solar power on the roofs and in doing so to make a contribution to the energy transition. “We are a strong energy partner and offer everything under one roof – from the supply of electricity and green electricity certificates to business solutions for photovoltaics, battery storage and charging infrastructure for electromobility. We accompany and support our customers on the way to the energy future,” says Martin Wagner, managing director of VERBUND Energy4Business GmbH.
