OMV and VERBUND: Initial operation of the Schönkirchen PV system
26.07.2022Vienna, Schönkirchen
VERBUND and OMV are expanding the existing outdoor photovoltaic system by 3,898 MWp to a total output of 15.32 MWp, thereby achieving a total saving of around 14,000 tonnes of CO2 per year (compared to fossil electricity production with coal).
OMV, the international, integrated oil, gas and chemical company with head office in Vienna, and VERBUND, Austria's leading energy company and one of the biggest generators of electricity from hydropower in Europe, have put the next phase of the outdoor photovoltaic system on the OMV site in Schönkirchen/Lower Austria into operation. The project is supported in equal measure by OMV and VERBUND.
On one of OMV's own landfill sites of 13.3 hectares (133,200 m²) in Schönkirchen/Lower Austria, an outdoor photovoltaic system with a total capacity of 15.32 MWp is now being put into operation. The 15.84 GWh produced here annually will be used to cover OMV's own electricity requirement, which is generated in a climate-friendly way using solar energy.
In the first phase of development, a total of 34,600 installed PV modules lying in an east-west orientation generated 12.10 GWh of solar power, which corresponds to about the annual electricity consumption of 3,400 households, which translates to a saving of around 10,000 tonnes of CO2. This existing system was supplemented with another 8,568 PV modules. This has increased total output to 15.32 MWp with 15.84 GWh generated, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of around 5,000 households and saves an additional 4,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
“Together with VERBUND, we are now putting the expansion of the outdoor photovoltaic system in Schönkirchen/Lower Austria into operation. In line with our OMV Strategy 2030, we are therefore supporting the goal of expanding our solar and wind power business for in-house needs to at least 1 TWh. This way, we are making a contribution to achieving the climate targets and consistently continuing along our path of reducing our CO2 intensity,” says Wilhelm Sackmaier, managing director of OMV Austria Exploration & Production GmbH.
“The VERBUND strategy 2030 envisages clear growth in the area of renewable energies, with the goal of reaching around 20-25% of total generation from photovoltaics and onshore wind by 2030,” says Marting Wagner, managing director of VERBUND Energy4Business. “With the initial operation of the second expansion stage, we are taking another step towards the energy transition together!”
