Heading towards the energy future with new apprentices

04.09.2024Ybbs, Persenbeug-Gottsdorf, Hofamt-Priel

This year for the first time, the new LernWerkStatt Donau was the stage for the traditional presentation of the apprenticeship contracts for 22 future power plant operators.

Michael Amerer, who as managing director of VERBUND Hydro Power GmbH is also responsible for apprentice training within the VERBUND Group, welcomes apprentices, parents and guests of honour to the LernWerkStatt Donau at the Ybbs-Persenbeug power plant. The new training facility was completed in 2023. “Training our own skilled workers, producing real power plant operators, is part of our conviction and our success, and impacts many areas – from plant availability to promising innovations,” says Michael Amerer. “With the new LernWerkStatt Donau, we offer an optimal learning environment and show the high value placed on apprenticeships and trainees in our company.”

Excellent results in the skilled worker exam

The unique dual vocational training programme at the VERBUND apprenticeship workshop in Ybbs-Persenbeug rightly has an excellent reputation: the 22 apprentices, including 3 women, achieved a total of 27 awards in their examinations.

After almost 18 months under construction, a modern apprentice facility with flexible training rooms has been completed on the site of the Danube power plant Ybbs-Persenbeug. VERBUND invested more then 12 million euros here in the expansion of the in-company training facilities for its “power plant operators”.

A park-like campus connects the apprentice workshop to the new lodgings. Zones of communication and retreat offer contemporary levels of comfort in combination with 42 single rooms, including three wheelchair-accessible rooms.
Both the training staff and the apprentices were included in the planning. Short distances and an efficient arrangement of the rooms fulfil the needs of the users. The main task was to create an optimal learning environment that offers a pleasant atmosphere for individual and group study.

Apprenticeships more attractive for women
Women are still under-represented in technical apprenticeships. VERBUND is making great efforts to increase the proportion of women. This year, four young women are starting their apprenticeship at Ybbs-Persenbeug.
