Verbund at the Austrian CSR Day

15.05.2008Wien

On Thursday 15 May, 2008, the third Austrian CSR Day was organised by respACT (Austrian Business Council for Sustainable Development) in Palais Niederösterreich. Verbund sponsored a panel on the subject of “Renewable Energies” and invited experts to join in the discussion.

The Austrian CSR Day is a regular event in the Austrian CSR community and offers an ideal opportunity for the exchange of ideas and networking. Under the motto “Companies on the ball. Success through social and ecological commitment”, the main panel discussed the subject "Euro 2008: fair to the environment? Fair to people?". In addition, there was the Verbund panel with the focal point "Sustainable energy supply" and the panel on the subject "Dealing with the diversity!", as well as workshops concerning social and ecological responsibility.

Within the framework of a "World Café", company representatives extended an invitation to a discussion of the role of business in society. Requirements and challenges were compiled on the basis of specific subjects, such as energy, health & safety and human rights.

About the Verbund panel:
Sustainability makes up the core business of the Verbund respACT members: since its founding, Verbund has generated the majority of its electricity from the renewable energy source of hydropower. Since 2002, Verbund has published an annual sustainability report and taken a significant role in the further development of international guidelines for the  Global Reporting Initiative. In order to strengthen the sustainability approach, Verbund supports the CSR DAY with a panel on the subject of “Sustainable energy supply — from the roles of the EU and the energy supplier right through to the consumer”.

Under the guidance of Monika Langthaler, the discussion was carried out by Arno Behrens from the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), Dr. Alois Flatz from Venture Capital Fonds ZOUK Ventures Ltd., Johannes Stockinger MSc from oekoplan, Dieter Meyer from VERBUND-Austrian Renewable Power GmbH and Renate Pretscher, the Verbund Group sustainability delegate, on the challenges facing countries, energy suppliers and companies as a result of the European energy and climate protection goals. Also discussed were European trends in the energy sector, approaches and strategies by the European energy supplier, trends in the investment sector, and Verbund’s strategies etc. Furthermore, the participants tackled the question of how companies from different branches can make a contribution to energy efficiency and climate protection, and which measures hold the greatest potential.
