VERBUND: Decision on Thermal Power Plant Portfolio

14.05.2014Vienna

VERBUND is providing information regarding the planned course of action for the thermal power portfolios. The temporary closure of the gas and combined cycle power plant in Mellach and of the two French gas and combined cycle power plants as well as the closure of the coal-fired power station of Dürnrohr and the oil-fuelled district heating power station are planned.

The massive drop on the European electricity market is leading to economic pressure across all sectors, especially in the thermal energy area and all electricity production companies are suffering. VERBUND has intensively run through all options to optimise the entire thermal energy power plant portfolio in previous months and is planning on implementing the following measures, which in the coming years should lead to a permanent improvement:

  • the temporary closure of the gas and combined cycle power plant in Mellach,
  • the temporary closure of the French gas and combined cycle power plants in Pont-sur-Sambre and Toul,
    • the closure of the coal-fired power station in Dürnrohr,
    • the closure of the Neudorf/Werndorf II oil-fuelled district heating power station.

The coal-fired power plant in Mellach will remain in operation to supply district heating to the city of Graz.

The VERBUND supervisory board has yet to declare its approval.
