In 2014, we became the first company in the DACH region to issue a green bond. The funds raised, amounting to €500m, were used to finance wind power plants in Austria and Germany, the Reißeck II pumped storage project and efficiency-enhancing measures at the Ybbs run-of-river power plant. In 2021, VERBUND issued the world's first green and sustainability-linked bond to combine all four green components (a bond with use of proceeds in line with the EU taxonomy, a sustainability-linked bond and strong preferential treatment of sustainable investors according to a transparent criterion in the bookbuilding) in a single transaction. The €500m raised was used to finance a run-of-river power plant in Germany and grid projects in Austria.
In 2024, VERBUND issued a €500m green bond that included biodiversity. The funds were used to finance a grid project in Austria and two biodiversity projects at run-of-river power plants in Austria and Bavaria.
