Ybbs-Persenbeug: New rotor for more electricity on the Danube

Tricky crane deployment in the VERBUND Danube power plant at Ybbs-Persenbeug: two cranes for the 236-tonne rotor work with millimetre precision.
Both mighty gantry cranes of the Danube power plant Ybbs-Persenbeug reach straight out to lift the new rotor for machine no. 3. Even for the experienced power plant team, it remains a challenge to lower the 10 metre-wide component into the turbine shaft with millimetre precision. Thus, an important milestone in the Ybbs2020 revitalisation programme is reached.
Achim Kaspar, responsible for the area of generation on the Executive Board of VERBUND AG, visited the site in person to get an idea of progress. “The work done by the project team and the power plant team is impressive. I am especially proud of the fact that most of them are our own staff, who received their training in our own training workshop.
Machine no. 3 is the penultimate machine replacement programme at Ybbs. The last of the turbines from the 1950s will be renovated this coming autumn. “Wherever possible, we are revitalising our power plants. The large Danube power plants in particular offer even more potential for a tangible contribution to the energy transition,” says Achim Kaspar.
The components are all original parts from the 1950s and VERBUND is replacing them in stages with new plant parts. The refurbishment at the Ybbs-Persenbeug location also includes the replacement of the control systems, cables and transformers. Once the project is complete in 2022, the power plant will generate electricity for an additional 22,000 households. In total, VERBUND is investing 144 million euros in the Ybbs-Persenbeug site.

More electricity from hydropower
The heart of electricity generation is the generator. A movable ring (rotor) is driven inside a stationary ring (stator) by the Danube via the turbine, which in turn generates electricity from hydropower.The components are all original parts from the 1950s and VERBUND is replacing them in stages with new plant parts.
