VERBUND welcomes new security of supply package
VERBUND, Austria’s leading electricity company, welcomes the government’s security of supply package. VERBUND General Director Hans Haider: “The package makes an essential contribution to the further enhancement of the accustomed high level of supply security in Austria. We hope that the package will soon be adopted in parliament.”
The security of supply package comprises several amendments to various laws such as the Electricity Industry and Organization Act (ElWOG) or the Energy Steering Act. These amendments will also lead to the implementation of international safety standards that are urgently required in the area of electricity transmission. Moreover, the package will introduce regulations on congestion management within the power grid which has already been carried out for a number of years. In future, the secure legal basis will allow VERBUND-Austrian Power Grid AG (APG), Austria’s leading grid operator, to engage in power plant operation in an environment in which fair compensation for power plant operators is clearly regulated. Greater data exchange between power plant and grid operators will pave the way for a significant improvement in grid management.
Dr. Heinz Kaupa, Technical Director at AHP explains: “As a supra-regional grid operator we will have access to more efficient ways of handling potential blackout situations.” Mag. Thomas Karall, Commercial Director at APG: “The package greatly improves the instruments at our disposal during emergency operation but does not, however, replace grid expansion. This has never been more vital.”
