Hiking paradise in the heart of the Alps
The High Alps Nature Park Zillertal Alps is a hiking paradise in the heart of the Alps, with pasture chalets or alpine mountain huts serving as the starting point for hikes around the Schlegeis, which also invite you to stop and stay a while.
The Schlegeis reservoir is surrounded by the High Alps Nature Park Zillertal Alps, which has shaped 422 km² of the Zillertal valley as a conservation area since 1991. Excellent routes and hiking trails as well as numerous shelter and pasture chalets make the region and its impressive backdrop the ideal point of departure for easy hikes, tours of moderate difficulty, lofty high-elevation trails and sporty summit tours. The area around the Schlegeis reservoir offers the perfect place for pleasure hikers and demanding alpinists.
Safe hiking
The hiking area already ranks among the high alpine regions. So there are a few important rules you need to follow:
- Wear sturdy shoes.
- Always take some food along on your hikes and especially enough to drink.
- Do not leave the marked hiking trails.
- Keep an eye on the weather: in the high mountains, the weather can change very quickly.
Nature park building
Besides interesting exhibits and impressions connected with the high mountain nature park Zillertaler Alps, in the nature park building you can also get tips for mountain tours and hiking routes.
The nature park building is in Ginzling, right along the Schlegeis Alpenstrasse Alpine Road. Toll tickets for the Schlegeis Alpine Road are available at the Nature Park House and at the ticket machine on site.
Hikes and refreshment stops at the Schlegeis reservoir
For families with children, a walk along the shore of the reservoir is a wonderful experience. The lakeside path along the Schlegeis offers an impressive view of the highest mountain in the Zillertal Alps, the Hochfeiler at 3,509 metres. Along the way, quiet spots with benches and loungers invite you to linger. Tyrolean specialities are served in the surrounding huts.
A special tip for a hike is the scenic tour to the Pfitscherjoch-Haus at 2,277 metres above sea level. The route, which leads across the border to South Tyrol, was already a popular Alpine crossing in the past. All tours in the high mountains have different levels of difficulty and walking times. Please always check the conditions and weather conditions before setting off on a hike or mountain tour.
