Danube impeller goes into retirement

The VERBUND power plant workers on the Danube are taking the next step in the machine replacement programme “Ybbs2020” by lifting out the old impeller of machine no. 2. The 130 tonne impeller was lifted out of the narrow shaft one centimetre at a time and is now being disassembled. The way is now free for the new, more efficient impeller.
The 7.4 meter impeller has more than 400,000 operating and about 11 billion kilowatt hours generated behind it. At the time of its installation in 1956, Ybbs-Persenbeug was the first Danube power plant in Austria and the entire pride of the nation. The machines were the biggest of their kind anywhere in Western Europe. Noteworthy: One statistic from 1960 shows that Ybbs together with Jochenstein supplied enough electricity for every household in Austria. Today, electricity consumption is five times greater. All the more important the increase in generation at Ybbs, which will supply electricity for an additional 22,000 households after the end of the project.
