VERBUND and the Westfalen Group agree cooperation on the supply of hydrogen
Green hydrogen from Austria: the industrial gases producer and energy and fuel trader Westfalen will in future obtain hydrogen from VERBUND AG, Austria’s leading energy company.
Both sides have now signed a corresponding declaration of intent in Vienna. The intention is to supply the Austrian national subsidiary Westfalen Austria with green hydrogen from 2026. The climate-friendly energy carrier is manufactured at several sites in Austria by VERBUND. Westfalen plans to supply the hydrogen mainly to medium-sized companies in Austria and southern Germany.
“The agreement we have signed with VERBUND allows us to underscore our ambition to make green hydrogen comprehensively available to our customers,” emphasises Dr Thomas Perkmann, CEO of the Westfalen Group. “In this way, we can enable sustainable progress and do our part to decarbonise the economy.” The family company from Münster has over 40 years of experience in handling hydrogen. Alongside its own planned electrolysers, additional purchases should contribute to the establishment of sustainable energy sources at Westfalen as a key growth area.
Within the scope of the cooperation, the green hydrogen will be produced by VERBUND Green Hydrogen GmbH, a fully consolidated subsidiary of VERBUND AG belonging to the largest generators of electricity from hydrogen in Europe.
For Michael Strugl, CEO of VERBUND AG, supplying hydrogen to Westfalen is an important strategic element for the engagement of VERBUND as a decarbonisation partner in medium-sized industry as well. “In addition to building up a comprehensive import portfolio, VERBUND Green Hydrogen GmbH is currently focusing on expanding local hydrogen production to supply our core markets. We are pleased to have found a partner in the Westfalen Group that has a distribution network for the direct supply of medium-sized industrial businesses – and thus delivers our hydrogen to the domestic economy.”
