Embankment work to protect against 1,000-year floods to start at the Rosenheim power plant at the end of October
At the end of October, VERBUND Innkraftwerke will start the work announced in the spring to raise and reinforce the embankments at the Inn power plant Rosenheim. The objective is to permanently guarantee protection against flooding, all the way up to 1,000-year events (HQ1000).
Preparatory nature conservation measures are currently still underway for the project, which are expected to be completed by the end of the week with the removal of the remaining rootstocks. The actual construction work to raise and reinforce the embankments and the water-side concrete seal at the Inn power plant Rosenheim will begin on 28 October 2024. The project area extends along the existing embankments on both sides of the Inn over a length of approx. 3 kilometres from the Rosenheim power plant to approx. 500 m north of the bridge over the A8 motorway.
The flood protection work is divided into two construction phases in the autumn and winter months of 2024/2025 and 2025/2026. In the first construction phase, the embankments will be reinforced in the entire work area. In the second construction phase, the embankment crowns are to be widened to 4 metres and raised by up to 45 centimetres, and the water-side concrete seal is to be raised by up to one metre.
Before the start of construction, the Inn Valley cycle path running along the embankments will be rerouted and the construction site cordoned off. The work areas must be closed for safety reasons during the construction period. The diversion of the footpaths and cycle paths will be signposted on site.
The flood protection project is scheduled for completion by March 2026.
Upgrade of rare habitats
200 kilometres of embankments under the maintenance of VERBUND line the Inn from Passau via Rosenheim to the border with Tyrol at Oberaudorf. The species-rich meadows on the Inn embankments form a flourishing strip through the mostly agricultural landscape
The embankments at the Inn power plant Rosenheim will also be redeveloped into a high-quality location with flower meadows, reptile structures and islands of shrubs and small trees by means of ecological measures and ongoing maintenance following completion of the improved flood defences.
All conservation and technical measures in relation to the embankment adjustment are taking place in consultation with and with the approval of the responsible specialised authorities of the District Office and of the water authority.
