SAMMLUNG VERBUND featuring a Birgit Jürgenssen exhibition

16.12.2010Vienna

SAMMLUNG VERBUND and the Bank Austria Kunstforum are presenting the first posthumous retrospective on the works of Birgit Jürgenssen (1949-2003).

The Austrian artist counts among the most important representatives of feminist art today. Birgit Jürgenssen used disguise and role-playing to express a subtle, often self-depreciating critique of traditional images of femininity.

At the heart of her examination of the “self” in the cultural fabric is the female body, which she employs as a place for artistic projections. Birgit Jürgenssen’s artistic work unites socio-political commitment and literary and psychoanalytical references, as well as a surrealistic delight in metamorphosis and play on words.

Ahead of the long-awaited retrospective there have been intense preparations by SAMMLUNG VERBUND. Thus, autumn 2009 saw the presentation of the first Birgit Jürgenssen monograph, edited by Gabriele Schor and the American art historian Abigail Solomon-Godeau.

With its 50 pieces of work, SAMMLUNG VERBUND is the only art institution to possess a comprehensive body of work from all of Birgit Jürgenssen’s periods of creativity and is a leading advocate for the rediscovery of the artist’s works. SAMMLUNG VERBUND most recently presented Birgit Jürgenssen’s works within the context of the collection’s focus on the “feminist avant-garde” in spring 2010, featuring 200 works from 17 different artists in Rome’s Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna.
