Modernisation of the administrative and workgroup site in Töging

Töging, 17 July 2024 – The historic building of the Inn power plant Töging of VERBUND Innkraftwerke GmbH is undergoing a realignment. Following the initial operation of the new power plant in 2022, the old, listed powerhouse is no longer needed for electricity generation after almost 100 years of service. However, it is being given a new purpose: as the Bavarian Hydropower Competence Centre, an innovative office location for around 150 people and a work centre for technical and administrative areas.

VERBUND is taking a significant step for the site’s future with the revitalisation of the historic powerhouse in Töging. The focus is on the redesign and conversion of the old building into a modern office and operations centre. Another component is the construction of a new workshop building on the other bank of the tailrace, which will bring together all administrative and operational areas in one place once it is completed.

As a first step, the preparatory measures for the preservation of the historic powerhouse were applied for at the Altötting district office at the end of April. Implementation is scheduled to start in summer 2024 as soon as the relevant authorisation is received. This includes draining and permanently sealing the former intake pipes in the power plant and demolishing outbuildings that are no longer required. These measures are crucial for creating the basis for subsequent revitalisation.

The topic of sustainability is a top priority in the project. According to initial analyses, the planned long-term use of the existing building could save around 4.5 t CO2 equivalent/m2 more than a new building. In addition, there is an end-to-end sustainability concept to further reduce the ecological footprint:

  • Photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the workshop,
  • Utilisation of waste heat from the generators of the neighbouring new power plant via heat extraction,
  • Use of natural displacement ventilation instead of a conventional ventilation system,
  • Supporting structure made entirely of wood.

The implementation of these measures is not only an example of sustainable property development, but also an important contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage. The powerhouse in Töging has a long history and is an architectural jewel that needs to be preserved.
